Henry Livingstone Grebe ’54

Henry Livingstone Grebe ’54 passed away on July 20, 2022, in Topsham, Maine. He grew up in Malden, Massachusetts, and graduated from Malden High School. At Dartmouth he majored in government, was a member of Gamma Delta Chi and Green Key Society, served as executive manager of the Athletic Council, and sang tenor with the Glee Club. He was a class agent for several years. In 1962 he received an M.B.A. in finance from New York University. Following graduation he initiated a banking career at Chase Manhattan. That was interrupted when he was drafted into the Army where he “spent two years eating dust and sand in Kansas.” He then returned to Chase and married Joan Hawker. In the mid-1960s they moved to the North Shore near Boston, where he joined Essexbank and ultimately rose to president and CEO. Following a merger, he became chairman of BNE North and, when Bank of New England went bankrupt in 1992, he retired. In the same year, Joan succumbed to a long battle with a brain tumor. He subsequently married Patricia, a fellow banking officer. He served on the boards of Lynn Union Hospital, Salem State College Foundation, and the New England chapter of Robert Morris Associates funding United Way. In retirement he assisted a wide variety of nonprofits in financial management and fundraising. He is survived by Patricia, sons John and David, and grandchildren Caroline and Henry.
