Henry Gordon Starkey ’60

Henry Gordon Starkey ’60 of New London, New Hampshire, passed away July 12 after a long battle with esophageal cancer. Born in Asheville, North Carolina, on September 28, 1938, to Henry Gordon and Sara Starkey, he was a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy. Gordon graduated from Dartmouth and then Thayer School with an M.S. in 1961. His sole employer was Hazen & Sawyer Consulting Engineers in New York City, where he became a partner. His specialty was consulting on water resources, potable water treatments, and water storage and transmission methods. His contributions spanned outside New York City to U.S. cities such as Chicago, Detroit, and Bridgeport, Connecticut, and foreign clients such as Sao Paulo, Brazil, Amman, Jordan, and Cali, Colombia. He had a major role on the benchmark North East Water Supply study for the U.S. Corps of Engineers. He was well respected by the founders of Hazen & Sawyer. He is remembered as having often joked that he accepted a job in New York City, thinking he would be there for one year. Retiring after 43 years, he and his wife of 46 years, Marcella, moved to New London. His family remembers Gordon as a dedicated father and husband. He and his wife enjoyed skiing and golf together, with Marcella at first a reluctant beginner who became an avid skier. He is survived by Marcella and their children, Andrew and Megan, and their families.
