Harold E. Harris Jr. ’60

Harold E. Harris Jr. ’60, M.D., died on February 19. Hal was born on September 19, 1938, in Cleveland to Dr. Harold and Tracie Harris. Hal graduated from Shaker Heights High School and at Dartmouth was a member of Delta Upsilon and sang in the Glee Club and the Handel Society. After graduation Hal earned a medical degree from Northwestern University School of Medicine in 1964. He trained at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation under his father in the specialty of otolaryngology. In 1969 he was drafted into military service at Westover Airforce Base and moved with his family to South Hadley, Massachusetts. Hal established a private practice in otolaryngology at Holyoke Hospital and remained there for more than 30 years. He served as president of medical staff for several years. As a member of the First Congregational Church, he sang in the choir for more than 30 years and participated in the South Hadley Chorale. After retiring in 1999, he enjoyed golfing, skiing, trains, music, and bridge. He was treasurer of the Sycamores Restoration Committee and a member of the Holyoke Rotary Club. His greatest avocation was repairing and restoring a century-old mansion at Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Most of all, Hal cherished time with his family. He is survived by his wife of almost 56 years, June, three daughters, and three grandchildren.
