George R. Cox ’57

George R. Cox ’57, M.D., passed away on April 24 due to complications from lung disease. George came to Dartmouth from Suffern (New York) High School. He was premed majoring in zoology, on the dormitory committee (four years), and in the Dartmouth Christian Union (four years). He earned his medical degree from New York University, then completed an internship and first-year residency at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He spent two years as a U.S. Navy physician in Okinawa, Japan, and Jacksonville, Florida. After military service he finished his residency in internal medicine at Manhattan Veterans Affairs Hospital in New York City and a postgraduate year at Yale University. In 1968 George launched his medical practice in his hometown of Suffern, New York. He continued working at Good Samaritan Hospital for the next 55 years. He loved the practice of medicine and was known as a knowledgeable and compassionate physician who cared about treating the whole patient not just symptoms. He served as medical director of United Hospice of Rockland County, finetuning his knowledge of pain management and end-of-life care. George’s life outside medicine was devoted to his family and his Christian faith. He served as an elder at All Souls Community Church in Suffern and led weekly Bible study sessions for many years. He also enjoyed gardening. He is survived by his wife, Joan, and daughters Debbie, Sharon ’93, Alison, and Liz.
