George H. Hitchcock ’54

George H. Hitchcock ’54 passed away December 18, 2021, in Hilton Head, South Carolina. He came to Dartmouth from Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati. A psychology major, he was a brother in Sigma Nu and a member of Glee Club, the Marching Band, Handel Society, and Barbary Coast. George went on to become a Navy pilot (1954-76), serving in Hawaii and “Operation Deep Freeze” in Antarctica. He transitioned to the Navy reserves while becoming a pilot for American Airlines (1965-92). Upon mandatory retirement he continued for a few years as a trainer for the Boeing 757. He supported the Dartmouth Alumni Fund and served as a volunteer. In 1986 he and wife Syl moved to Hilton Head, where they lived for more than 30 years. George served on the airport advisory board and aviation board and was president of the Port Royal Plantation Club. He enjoyed playing golf and the company of family and friends. George loved music and was a longtime member of the Hilton Head Choral Society as well as the All Saints Episcopal Choir and two other choruses. He is survived by sister Sally; daughters Paula and Martha; grandsons Ryan, Kyle, and Anthony; and great-grandsons Hitch, Davis, and Trey.
