Frederick Milner Putnam ’59

Frederick Milner Putnam ’59 passed away on September 8, 2011, of complications from multiple sclerosis. Rick entered Dartmouth from Spaulding High School in Barre, Vermont. He was a member of Gamma Delta Chi and the sophomore orientation committee. As communications director of Dartmouth’s winter sports division, Rick participated in its mission to promote undergraduate and community interest in skiing and ski competitions, including those of Winter Carnival. He was a member of Dartmouth Outing Club, the ski patrol and NROTC. Rick’s marriage in 1959 to Anne Hudson ended in divorce after 34 years. Rick was a supply officer on the USS Bearss. He earned an M.B.A. from Tuck School (1963). Rick worked in materials management for a variety of manufacturing companies, including Ford Motor Co., Stanley Works and Carolina Power & Light. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1982 and discontinued working in 1988. Rick married Wanda Wheeler in 1997, and lived in Winnemucca, Nevada, until 2001, when they moved to Meridian, Idaho. In Winnemucca Rick was a volunteer at Winnemucca Christian Fellowship, SCORE and on the board of the senior citizens center. In Meridian Rick volunteered at Ten Mile Christian Church, became active in Celebrate Recovery, volunteered with the Meridian police department and loved reading with second-grade students at Peregrine Elementary School. He actively worked with multiple sclerosis support groups. Wanda and Rick traveled extensively and took cruises. Wanda, children Lynn and Todd and stepchildren James and David survive Rick.
