Eugene Francis “Buddy” Teevens III ’79

Eugene Francis “Buddy” Teevens III ’79 died on September 19, 2023, from injuries suffered from a bike accident. Buddy was the Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach at Dartmouth and the winningest coach in Dartmouth football history. Buddy was born on October 1, 1956, and grew up in Pembroke, Massachusetts. At Dartmouth he majored in history, joined Beta Theta Pi, went on a language study abroad to Bourges, and was a member of Sphinx. Buddy played four years of Big Green football and hockey, sharing time at quarterback junior year and captaining the team senior year, leading the team to the Ivy crown. He was Dartmouth’s MVP and was named the Ivy League and ECAC Player of the Year. Buddy also lettered in hockey and was named as Dartmouth’s outstanding athlete in 1979. Buddy had a long and illustrious coaching career, including positions at DePauw, Boston University, Maine, Tulane, Illinois, Florida, and Stanford. He twice served as Dartmouth’s head coach, from 1987 to 1991 with two Ivy League titles, and again from 2005 to 2022, winning three more titles. Buddy and John Currier ’79 developed the MVP tackling dummy, eliminating live tackling during practice. Buddy always supported and cared for others before himself. He silently insisted we live our best lives and his infectious passion made us better. His classmates loved him. Buddy is survived by his wife, Kirsten (an adopted ’79), children Lindsay and Eugene “Buddy” IV and their spouses, and grandchildren Caroline, Jack, Eugene V, and Leila.
