Edward V. Sabisky ’79

Edward V. Sabisky ’79 died on March 1, 2020, from a stroke he had suffered 10 days before. Ed lived in the United Kingdom for many years. Ed was raised in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. At Dartmouth freshman year he lived in Gile with Steve Daniell ’79 and Charlie Rowe ’79. Steve comments that the three “got along well, laughed a lot, and, as roommates go, considered ourselves a lucky little clutch of odd ducks.” Ed had double majors in economics and government and played freshman soccer. For many years Ed worked in finance for General Motors in Europe. He then became the executive finance director for the Transport and General Workers’ Union in the United Kingdom, which later became Unite the Union, now the second-largest trade union in the United Kingdom. The general secretary of Unite said: “Ed was a pillar of decency and personal integrity, a kind colleague, wise counselor, and talented executive who determined to put his skills at the service of trade unionism because he shared our values. Every one of us at Unite will miss Ed. He leaves the largest hole in our operations and our lives.” Ed told a classmate in a phone call that he and his family had settled into a big stone manor house in rural north Wales; he sounded amazed and overjoyed with his good fortune. Ed is survived by his wife, Kate, and their six children.
