Edward E. Hazen Jr. ’51

Edward E. Hazen Jr. ’51, Ph.D., a member of a four-generation Dartmouth family that dates back to his great-grandfather, the Rev. Norman Hazen, class of 1840, died on December 5, 2017, in Bryan, Texas. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anne, three children, four grandchildren and his brother, Robert. Ted was a professor of biochemistry at Texas A&M University for 20 years. In this role he was a respected teacher, graduate student advisor, recruiter of doctoral candidates and dedicated researcher. His work focused on the structure of proteins. Earlier in his academic career he served on the faculty at MIT, following postdoctoral studies there. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University. At Dartmouth Ted majored in chemistry and was a member of Gamma Delta Chi. Following graduation he served for three years in the U.S. Marine Corps as a radio operator in Korea. Giving back was a theme in Ted’s life. He was a founding member of his church, sang in its choir and served on many of its committees. He was a dedicated leader and volunteer for 30 years at Brazos Church Pantry and received a Good Neighbor Award from Brazos Beautiful for his conscientious commitment to picking up trash. A gentle, quiet man, he loved reading, long walks, classical music, gardening (he was famous for his compost pile), traveling to see the world and pets of all kinds.
