Edward D. Wynot Jr. ’65

Edward D. Wynot Jr. ’65 of Tallahassee, Florida, died on August 12. Ed came to Dartmouth from Manchester, New Hampshire, and as an undergraduate played football, marched with the Army ROTC, and was a member of Sigma Epsilon. Ed went on to get an M.A. and Ph.D. from Indiana University. An expert in European history, especially the history of Poland, Ed wrote five books and more than 35 articles on the subject and taught at Florida State for 45 years until his 2015 retirement. He was particularly proud of cofounding the United Faculty Union of Florida. Ed had many other interests. If the weather was good he could be found fishing on a river or lake. He loved football, having played in high school and college, and loved watching Florida State University and his beloved Jacksonville Jaguars play. He also enjoyed watching basketball and hockey and was a coach for his children’s basketball teams when they were younger. He was involved with competitive pistol shooting through the Florida Peace Officers Association, the NRA, and the Tallahassee Rifle and Pistol Club, a hobby that he shared with his son, Greg. A lifelong Boy Scout and Eagle Scout, he enjoyed instilling his love of scouting and outdoors activities with Greg (an Eagle Scout) and grandsons. Ed is survived by his wife, Colleen; daughter Jennifer and her husband, James; Greg and his wife, Callie; and five grandchildren.
