Edward Carshore Matthews ’47
Edward Carshore Matthews ’47, M.D., died March 17 of cancer in Damariscotta, Maine, where he had practiced pediatrics and pediatric cardiology since 1971. He grew up in Passaic, New Jersey, attended Montclair Academy and entered college as a civilian. He joined the naval unit and graduated from Dartmouth Medical School summa cum laude in 1947. He completed his M.D. at McGill University in 1949. He completed a residency in pediatric cardiology at the University of Cincinnati. After service in the Navy from 1950 to 1952, he moved to Portland, Maine, to start a pediatric practice. In addition he was instrumental in starting the first group pediatric practice in Maine. He ran a busy practice for 30 years and was esteemed by his many patients and the medical community for his keen clinical skills. In 1974 he and his family moved to Nobleboro, Maine, and he retired in 1989. He was an ardent sailor and alpine skier and enjoyed boat building, rowing and writing. He was a long-time supporter of the Damariscotta River Association, volunteering as captain of the water-sampling boat. He is survived by his wife and five children as well as nephew Edward Gilmartin ’91.
