Edward Bernard Winnick ’54

Edward Bernard Winnick ’54, formerly of New Haven, Connecticut, died peacefully at the age of 88 on January 19 in Sarasota, Florida. He was predeceased by his parents, Bertha and Alexander, and his older brother, Gilbert. Ed came to Dartmouth from Hillhouse High. At Dartmouth he majored in government and was a brother in Pi Lambda Phi, Pre-Law Club, and Navy ROTC. He went on to Yale Law School in 1959. From 1954 to 1957 he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy, stationed on the USS Worcester. He was proud of his service to his country and his responsibility for the navigation and safety of the ship as officer of the deck. He then practiced law in New Haven for more than 50 years at the Winnick firm founded by his father. He returned to Hanover regularly and was chairman of the alumni advisory committee on Jewish life at Dartmouth. He was very proud to have been a member of the board of the Roth Center for Jewish Life. He said working with other Dartmouth alumni to bring the Roth Center to fruition was a most meaningful experience. Ed volunteered locally in Woodbridge, Connecticut, as chair of the Democratic Town Committee. He also chaired the Endowment Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Greater New Haven. He leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Mary Lou; children Beth ’83, Martha, Tu’92, and Michael; their spouses; and grandchildren Alexander, Benjamin, Samantha, Elizabeth, Carly, Philip, Mary, and Kathleen.
