Douglas S. Holmes ’57

Douglas S. Holmes ’57 passed away on January 6. Doug came to Dartmouth from Milburn (New Jersey) High School. He majored in modified philosophy and was a member, vice president, and social chairman of Chi Phi. He earned his doctorate in philosophy at the University of Wisconsin. Doug worked in Veterans Administration hospitals, in organizational psychology for the U.S. Army Research Institute, and in private practice. He purchased a home in South Fork Ranches in Rileyville, Virginia, was one of the first full-time residents, and continued to live there, raising a family, for more than 40 years. The mountainous landscape, Shenandoah River, and wildlife were part of what he called his sanctuary. With his Airedale Daisy Mae by his side, he especially loved creating butterfly gardens, bird safe havens, and comfortable habitat for deer. He is survived by his wife, Linda, daughters Linda and Jill, stepson Shawn, stepdaughter Cynthia, and two grandchildren. Son David predeceased him.
