Donald E. Kubit ’64

Donald E. Kubit ’64 peacefully passed away at his home in Coral Gables, Florida, on November 12, 2016, following a long battle with emphysema and heart disease. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Alice. Donald left his Cleveland home for Dartmouth in 1960 and fell in love with the mountains of New Hampshire. Graduating with a bachelor’s in philosophy and literature, he was honored to deliver the Sachem Oration on Class Day. In 1966 he began an 11-year tenure at the University of Miami, serving as assistant vice president for student affairs, ombudsman and secretary of the university. He earned his master’s in education as well as a J.D. cum laude while working full time for the university. In 1977 he began the practice of law, lasting 40 years, during which time he also served on the Orange Bowl committee and was elected its president in 1995. He was especially proud to have been selected to administer a $35-million research gift to the University of Miami to find cures for cancer and diabetes. Acting on his admiration for Dartmouth dean Thad Seymour, Don became a lifelong counselor, formally at UM and later by nature. His life was greatly enriched by former students returning with gratitude for his wise and timely counsel. He was a member of Sigma Nu Delta, and several brothers and classmates attended when his ashes were committed to his beloved Chokoloskee Bay, Florida.
