David H. O’Neill ’51

David H. O’Neill ’51, whose years at Dartmouth fostered a love of New England and the outdoors that had a profound effect on the rest of his life, died on January 25 in Bedford, New Hampshire. Dave came to Dartmouth from West Orange, New Jersey, and immediately immersed himself in the College’s outdoor offerings. He was a member of the Dartmouth Outing Club, the Canoe Club, Cabin & Trail, the Winter Carnival Committee, and Green Key. He majored in botany. Following two years as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army (Infantry), he joined Exxon Corp. in its sales division. He left Exxon to become a commercial real estate broker. In 1972 he moved with his family to New Hampshire, where he established his own real estate firm, David H. O’Neill & Associates. Dave continued to enjoy the outdoors as a skier, fisherman, and golf player. He loved animals, especially his golden retriever. He built birdhouses, maintained busy birdfeeders, and rescued flying squirrels and mice in his basement. Dave is survived by his wife, Harriet, four children, and four grandchildren. His father, Clifford R. O’Neill, was a 1917 Dartmouth graduate. His late brother, Richard, was a member of Dartmouth’s class of 1952.
