Daniel Sommer Clark ’73

Daniel Sommer Clark ’73 died on October 1, 2005, at Maine Medical Center in Portland from metastatic melanoma. Dan came to Dartmouth from Westfield (New Jersey) High School. At the College he majored in English and earned both a master’s in English and a master of education degree at the University of Maine. Dan taught English and special education in Maine public schools in East Corinth, Harrington and Gorham and for 12 years at the George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill. He was an outdoorsman who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Mount Katahdin several times in Maine and numerous other high peaks in northern New England. Dan was an amateur musician with a particular interest in Irish, African and African-American folk music, blues and jazz. A Boston Red Sox fan, he worked periodically at Hadlock Field in Portland, home of the Portland Sea Dogs, a minor league team affiliated with the Sox. Dan is survived by his wife, Jennie, his parents, one brother and two sisters. Memorial contributions can be made in Dan’s name to the American Cancer Society or to a special education scholarship fund to be established in his memory, in care of Gorham High School, 41 Morrill Ave., Gorham, ME 04038.
