Daniel B. Southard Jr. ’65
Daniel B. Southard Jr. ’65 of Redding, Connecticut, died February 13 after a 12-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. Dan grew up in Wilton, Connecticut, and came to Dartmouth from Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts. At Middlesex he was captain of the football team and later inducted into its athletic hall of fame. Dan’s memories of Dartmouth included late nights in Baker, the Bema in springtime and time spent at Shattuck Observatory as an assistant in the astronomy department. He regretted that a knee injury prevented him from continuing to play football. After graduation Dan became the youngest pilot ever hired by Trans World Airlines (TWA). He met his wife, Peggy, at TWA, and they married in 1970. From 1967 to 1973 they lived in Manhattan, where he received his M.B.A. in international business management at NYU, then moved to Redding, where they built a house on Hopewell Woods Road and raised daughters Stephanie and Mimi. When TWA helped establish Saudi Arabian Airlines, Dan was among a group of pilots who flew for the new airline. The family lived in Saudi Arabia (1976) and then Paris (1983-88). Dan said traveling and living with family overseas was one of the great pleasures of his 37 years with TWA. Throughout their marriage Dan and Peggy maintained a warm relationship with Peggy’s parents and eight siblings in Hong Kong. Dan is survived by Peggy; Stephanie and her husband, Guy; Mimi and her husband, Ben; two sisters, five grandchildren; five nephews; and one niece.
