Dabney Yeaman Hofammann ’76

Dabney Yeaman Hofammann ’76, M.D., passed away on May 24, 2021, at home in Decatur, Alabama. He came to Dartmouth from Indian Springs School in Helena, Alabama. At Dartmouth Dabney majored in chemistry, played freshman basketball, served as house manager at Phi Delta Alpha, and was a member of the Canoe Club. During summers he put his white-water canoeing skills to good use, working for Nugent’s Camps in Chamberlain Lake, Maine, as a registered Maine guide leading guests down the Allagash River. He was described by one of his former basketball teammates as a gentle giant who didn’t know his own strength but was a force to be reckoned with on the boards. While his basketball career was limited by knee problems, his knees never stopped him from being a great dancer, especially swing and jitterbug. Dabney then attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine, graduating in 1980. After his general surgery residency, three years of orthopedic residency, and a fellowship focused on adult arthritis surgery, he entered the private practice of orthopedic surgery in Decatur. Active in his profession, he served as a board member and as president of the Clinical Orthopedic Society, the second-oldest national orthopedic group in the United States. Dabney was also an avid outdoorsman, hunting quail and training bird dogs. Dabney is survived by his wife, Leslie; son Allen; daughter Elizabeth; and grandsons Davis and Luke.
