Looking back at our class’s formative 1945 year, we were 389 freshmen: 49 entered in March, 221 in July and 119 in November. The average age of the first two groups was 17 years and 9 months.

After I mentioned two columns ago that my wife, Vi, died, several classmates rallied round with warm notes and news.

This is a hard column to write because my wife, Vi, died on August 4 from LAM, a rare, genetic degenerative lung disease. Vi first came to Dartmouth in November 1945, when she was 15, and stayed at professor Louis Benezet’s house.
