Class Note 1938

Issue

May - June 2016

As I write this column, I am awe struck at May-June 2016: This means that the newest addition to the Dartmouth alumni will be the class of 2016 and their greatest achievement will come to fruition as they accept their “passports” to start their new journey and adventure, much the same as the amazing class of 1938 did 78 years ago. Where did all those years go; seems like only yesterday!

Just this past week, on my way to work (which is when I do my best thinking), so many memories came to mind of those individuals who I met along my adventure—Al Wolff, Adrian Weiss, Brad Jenkins, Asher Lans, Jack Russell, Bob Ross, Phil Leach, Bob Reeve, Lew Parker and so many more too numerous to mention—all of whom provided me with a bit of the Dartmouth experience. When I arrived home that evening, lo and behold, there was a card from Phil Thompson from Portland, Maine, a place where we spent many a summer. Thank you so much, Phil, for your thoughts as it was so good to hear from you. It was a card wishing me well and thanking me for what I do—and it is so very little! What touched my heart was how he signed the card: “One of the few survivors.” A survivor is someone who shows a great determination to overcome difficulties and carry on, a fighter and, in a very positive way, a toughie, someone confident, optimistic and focusing on good things rather than bad. This is the makeup of the class of ’38—a group of confident, optimistic toughies. Never change; I love you just the way you are!

Think bright and happy thoughts—spring has arrived! Bless you all.
