Class Note 1938

Issue

Sept - Oct 2013

As I write this column, it is the end of June; and, as you read this column, it is probably somewhere in the middle of August. The class of ’38 is eagerly anticipating the 75th. The remaining 36 classmates of this amazing class should be very proud of who you are—part of an elite group of gentlemen who have the privilege of saying, “I was a man of Dartmouth, an experience like no other.” There are no words written, neither are there words that could be verbalized, to explain just what that means. I can honestly say that from experience, I never realized what absolute camaraderie a group of individuals could feel until I was so warmly welcomed into this class of gentlemen and their spouses, significant others, children, etc., in 1980. I missed quite a bit!

We can feel pain and we can reap the benefits of true happiness; and to explain or describe to anyone what it feels like to be a part of Dartmouth could be attempted—but how do you explain or expect anyone to feel the emotions that overtake you at what an amazing accomplishment occurred over 25, 50, 75 years? It could be a second home to some or it could be the only home some ever had—a place where they could be who they are, a place where lifelong friendships continue to flourish to this day, a place or ideal that provided the life we all so enjoy.

Quite frankly, all the feelings you never thought you would ever feel when you arrived in Hanover in September 1934. It is my hope that you will look back over these 75 years and a smile will come to your face, a tear to your eye, a lump in your throat…and you give a rouse for dear old Dartmouth—a truly blessed place, or as my husband would say, hallowed ground.

I will share the 75th with you in the next column, but rest assured if you are unable to attend, a chair will be there with your name on it and I will make it known who the remaining members of the amazing class of ’38 are!

Stay well and know that you are always in my thoughts.
