Class Note 1964

Issue

November-December 2026

Class Note 1964. This column is from former class president Hunt Whitacre.
It has been a long time since we heard from our classmate Nevin Schreiner. Nevin has had a very successful career as a screenwriter in Hollywood, with Flight 93 one of his most awarded efforts. He has written the movies Web of Deception, Don’t Talk to Strangers, A Kiss So Deadly, and Deep Family Secrets among others. Of particular note, he has written a well-received book, A German Family, set in one week in Germany during WW II. It is available on Amazon. Of his latest book, Nevin says, “It’s not your usual novel and might prove controversial.” For the past eight years he has been teaching graduate screenwriting at University of Southern California. After Dartmouth Nevin went to Oxford for two years for a master’s and later attended Columbia. Nevin has been married, has two offspring, and spends time relaxing in Northern California.
Jay Evans writes, “I was thinking of you just the other day: Saw an old photo of our lineup for Homecoming parade. We were a small group holding the banner, you and Lynne, one of your daughters, the two of us, and the Hewitts. I’m sure more classmates showed up the next day for the game. Our news is that my cancer regained the advantage this past spring. It’s since been knocked back with radiation and chemo. The treatment and period of inactivity have left me weaker and missing hair on the left side of my head along with one of my signature eyebrows. I’ve been in touch recently with Derick Denby, Jim Latham, and Steve Bletcher. They are all doing well! Steve told me that there was nothing special about having cancer. His crew of four cruising the Maine coast this summer all have some sort of cancer. I’m convinced that having the disease causes you to value your days and often get more out of them. Hasty and I will be traveling in Jordan and Egypt this fall (packing flak jackets), returning to the Bahamas this winter, and cruising the Baltic next spring. Sounds like a lot but seems just right for us. We are planning to make a home game in October. I continue to enjoy painting and can report that I won first prize for an oil submitted to a show last winter in Plymouth [Massachusetts].”
Thank you, Nevin and Jay, for sharing. Classmates please keep sending us updates.
