Class Note 1952
Issue
November-December 2026
Class Note 1952. Through these many years, the Dartmouth crew, men and women, have distinguished themselves competitively on the water, and our classmates have played a central role in the sport, as undergraduates and with our alumni support.
A little history: Rowing is Dartmouth’s oldest sport, starting in 1833. The College has two well-appointed boathouses and state-of-the-art facilities down on the Connecticut River. You may recall the river became ideal for rowing after the Wilder Dam, just below Hanover, was completed in 1950. In past years we have reported on recognition of classmate JimToffey and his late wife, Sally, who have shells named in their honor. Each fall, the crew celebrates with the Gardner Cup weekend, named after Peter Gardner, longtime coach at Dartmouth. This year the College will be naming three new shells, and the first honor goes to classmate Jack Unkles, a member of the varsity crew in our undergraduate days. Jack will be joined by his four sons for the presentation, and we are very pleased with this recognition. We have been in touch with him recently, and he reports he continues to divide his time between Jupiter, Florida, and Sunapee, New Hampshire—and he is still playing golf! Congratulations, Jack!
We close with a reminder: We hope it will be possible and practical for a representative number of classmates, spouses, partners, and family to join us for the 75th reunion next year in late September. In the meantime, we send all best wishes to the ’52 family for the holiday season and for 2027. Please stay in touch.
