Class Note 1945
Issue
November-December 2026
Class Note 1945. In our last Class Notes, I mentioned the exhibit at the Hood Museum that was curated to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our country. It was comprised entirely of the Hood’s own collection, and it was remarkable. I read the book 1776 with my book club and then toured the exhibit. I learned more than I could have imagined!
Now, there is more exciting news from the museum: Kim Conaty, formerly the chief curator of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, was named the new director of the Hood at the end of August. She began her tenure on October 27. Conaty is a specialist in modern and contemporary art with a focus on drawings and prints, and succeeds John Stomberg who, during his 10-year tenure, oversaw the $50-million renovation and expansion of the museum. Our new director was quoted as saying, “I am a firm believer that academic museums have the power to create transformative experiences.” I am eager to see the happenings at the spectacular new Hood under the exciting new leadership of Kim Conaty in the years to come. The museum certainly is one of the special places at Dartmouth.
Speaking of special places and campus changes, two spectacular new dorms housed the incoming students this fall. The Fayerweathers were completely renovated with additions off the back, new windows, new floor plans, and wonderful new rooms. Russo Hall, newly constructed on West Wheelock Street, opened this fall for juniors and seniors, and it is the best of the best in new dormitory design. It is an exciting addition to the campus housing inventory. President Beilock has stated that happy and healthy housing for all students is a priority. She is making good on that promise.
As the holiday season approaches, I wish you all many happy moments with family and friends.
