Class Note 1973. There are too many campaign ads!
The mid-May gathering in Asheville, North Carolina, for a collective 75th birthday celebration included 16 classmates and quite a few significant others: Chuck Appleby, Val Armento, Anne and Doug Bate, Dan Crowley, Sarah and Jim Fleischer, Nancy and Richard Guy, Brenda and Bob Haynes, Pat and Russ Kelley, Suzanne and Thad King, Allen Kraus, Judy and Kevin O’Shea, Rick Routhier and Sarah Kahn, Rod Thompson and Jonathan Freilich, Roger and Anne Derry Whidden, and Donna and George Wolohojian. Activities engaged in to varying degrees were a nighttime visit to the “Cradle of Forestry in America” in the Pisgah National Forest to see blue ghost fireflies; a hike to the Grassy Ridge Bald at Carver’s Gap, which afforded sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains across three states; and tours of the Penland School of Craft education center, the Biltmore Estate, and various sites and art galleries in Asheville. Allen, orchestrator of the hike and visit to the Penland School, clearly knows and loves the environs. Thad handled arrangements at the historic Flat Iron Hotel, formerly an office building modeled on the one in N.Y.C., complete with adjacent Wall Street.
Several attendees have retired but others have not or are on second careers. Chuck’s Appleby and Associates, headquartered in Vienna, Virginia, provides clients with assistance in strategy development, organizational assessment, work system design, leadership development, coaching, and change management. He says the secret to success in most situations is “listen to people!” Richard is a “womb-to-tomb” business lawyer with Woods Rogers in Virginia and is an adjunct professor at William & Mary Law School. June found him in Germany pursuing genealogical research. Rod is a member of the Bartlett Maritime Corp. senior advisory board and the chief financial officer for American Naval Shipyard. Both entities focus on supporting the U.S. Navy. Bob is active with the College’s sponsors recruiting fund advisory board, and your scribe continues to provide legal services to governmental entities. Rick is embarking upon a new career as a fully certified EMT, having taken all required training courses (a minimum of 150 hours) as well as written and practical exams.
Mike Ultee sent this update in June: “This January I took up the saxophone, an instrument I’ve always admired but never played before. Other than a few years in middle school as a mediocre clarinetist, the only musical instrument that I have played is handbells in a church choir—very different from a sax. A friend of mine who is a big-band leader and saxophonist has been giving me weekly lessons. After some initial doubts, I’m enjoying it now and look forward to participating in a summer music camp with my sax in Maine in July. I am also still enjoying brewing award-winning beers, oil painting landscape scenes, and playing with my two young granddaughters.”
