Class Note 1972. Dear ’72s, our 55th reunion is June 14-16, 2027. I came across a poem my great uncle, Jack Childs, class of 1909, wrote for his 50th: “To greet the friends we hold so dear/To sup the cup that brings good cheer/To sing old songs/To have a ‘beef’/To turn our life’s book back a leaf/To feel old joys within the breast/To give old business cares a rest/To mingle with old-time pals/To see a few classmates’ ‘gals’/To bring fond mem’ries to the heart/To soothe the days when we’re apart/To feel the same relentless pain; When final parting comes again/To hope the time will soon pass over/And we’ll be back again in Hanover.”
Jack Manning planned a family vacation for 30 days to Turkey, Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, and Albania, with up to 10 family members for a week in Croatia. Jack and Peggy annually travel to Indian Wells, California, to see tennis and went to Wimbledon last year. Michael Williams sent a note to Joe Davis about contacting classmates—including John Collier (Thayer emeritus professor), Bert Caldwell, Rob Sutcliffe, Bob Meyers—and former Richardson Hall residents Peter Dorwood ’73, Jim Huggett ’71, Jon Blum ’73, Chaz Carner ’74, and Barry Grove ’73. I reached out to Michael and discovered that he lived in Montpelier, Vermont, after graduation for a few years and subsequently opened a bookstore in Charlottesville, Virginia, with his wife, Jill, called Williams on the Corner. Michael and I shared hitchhiking stories and Michael shared some romantic encounters, including yelling in a Saratoga, New York, bar about going to a movie, If. A young woman named Penny Peyser grabbed Michael’s hand and off they went. Michael majored in Penny (later a well-known actress) and subsequent to that almost married her younger sister. The Peyser sisters were daughters of former N.Y. Congressman Peter Peyser.
Demetry Papadopoulos spent a great 12 days in Arizona in March, four days of which were at an interactive medical conference followed by eight days of engaging in astronomy in dark Arizona skies. After that, Demetry went to an acupuncture conference in Denver, where he bought a new telescope. Demetry pondered whether the telescope is a good diversified investment.
Jamie MacArthur sent a note to Joe Davis, and I followed up, hoping that Jamie would make it south of the border for our reunion. Jamie was not sanguine on crossing the Canadian border.
Peter Goodrich sent a sad note concerning the passing of Jeffry Cook. Peter and Jeff were prep school classmates, Dartmouth roommates, and each other’s best man. Jeff did postdoctoral research in physiology and enjoyed spending time at his lifelong lakeside camp in Norway, Maine. The hill winds know Jeff’s name.
