Class Note 1966. One hundred eleven classmates (rumored to be a 60th reunion record) from 25 states, D.C., and Canada, plus more than 60 “Dartmates,” returned to Hanover June 15-18 for what was universally described as a wonderful reunion.
The three days of sunny and warm weather certainly helped. Sessions with top professors brought us back into the classroom. Tours of the Baker-Berry Libraries (the Jones Media Center is a hidden gem), recently expanded Hopkins Center, the Hood Museum, and the marvelous new West End science facilities (a walk about in the Engineering & Computer Science Center is worth the trip) revealed the impressive range and depth of diverse resources available for students today.
At three encounters Sian Beilock demonstrated the passion, focus, and clarity that have already led to exciting new programs for the College and a national reputation for our new president for straight talk and sensible actions in challenging times. The incomparable Dartmouth Aires had us all lustily singing the alma mater at the conclusion of each of their two concerts.
However, it was the time together and at class-inspired programs that made the reunion most special. At an open meeting at the Dickey Center, classmates with extensive international careers—including Marty Adler, Jim Cason, Bob Hill, Gary Jefferson, Paul Klee, Joff Keane, Don Ries, Jim Sutherland, and Bill Todd—shared viewpoints and ideas. Class authors Peter Cleaves, Dave Godine, Steve Hayes, and Peter Pritchard discussed their creative processes and urged classmates to consider writing their memoirs. During a conversation with history professor Matt Delmont, many of our classmates, such as Dave Johnston and Ken Zuhr, candidly shared their often-life-altering experiences in the Vietnam era.
“Budge” Gere and Al Keiller did such a great job planning and running the reunion that they were unanimously elected president and vice president, respectively, of the class for the next five years! More details and photos of our 60th are at Dartmouth.66.org.
In a moving memorial service, the class paid tribute to the 227 classmates who have sadly died, including conductor and music educator George Emlen and lawyer Kevin Trainor, who passed away just months before the reunion.
