Class Note 1965

Issue

September-October 2026

Class Note 1965. I’m writing this column on June 13, the day before this year’s Dartmouth Commencement and 61 years to the day from our own graduation in Leverone Field House. I hope this gets to you in time to be a last-minute reminder of our fall mini-reunion, October 2-4, chaired by Roger Hansen. If you haven’t yet made up your mind, this is your last chance! Details are on our class website and noted below.
Reunion schedule: Friday 6 p.m., reception dinner at the home of Linda and Steve Fowler (Maple Street Catering); 7:30 p.m., Dartmouth Night bonfire on the Green; Saturday morning, Pine Park tour; noon, lunch in 1953 Commons; afternoon, football vs. Penn; 6 p.m., reception and dinner at Pierce’s; Sunday, 9:30 a.m., class meeting at Pierce’s.
Speaking of reunions, Rich Beams sent me a note with a picture of himself, Bill Webster, and Bill Brown proudly heading the parade at The Loomis School reunion weekend in June. From the picture they appear to be the “old fellows” there for their 65th. Besides them, Loomis also sent Rod Meade and Nick Feakins to the class of 1965 at Dartmouth.
Speaking now of prep schools, Rick Mahoney passed along the news that Jenny Karlen Elliott ’98, daughter of Laura and Sven Karlen, has been named the 17th principal at Phillips Exeter Academy, where, Rick says, “Jack Herney and I and the spirit of Dave Weber are ready to welcome her.”
You have probably heard the news of the gift from the Jim Frank family. Dartmouth announced it was “delighted to share news of a historic $25-million gift from Karen and Jim Frank ’65 and their son Daniel ’92 to advance Dartmouth’s commitment to open, honest, and respectful discourse. Dartmouth Dialogues is a distinctive, four-year framework to embed dialogue programs throughout the undergraduate experience, and Dartmouth is raising $50 million to permanently endow the initiative.” This gift is reportedly the largest gift ever to a university to fund such an initiative.
We have been notified of the loss of Doug Miller and Joel Sternman. For further information, visit www.biggreen65.com.
