Class Note 1964. Bill Hamm and his wife, Kathleen, are enjoying their new life in Alexandria, Virginia. “We had many reasons for wanting to relocate to the East Coast, but one of the most important was our increasing trepidation about attending the many cultural events in San Francisco that we so much enjoy. For years we had season tickets to the opera, ballet, and best-of-Broadway offerings, but the chaos on the streets in the areas surrounding the performance venues made us increasingly apprehensive about traveling to them. We did not anticipate a different form of chaos would severely limit our cultural opportunities in the Washington, D.C., area. Last year we attended 16 performances at the Kennedy Center. We were anticipating attending an equal number in 2026. The total for this year, however, will stall at three. Seven events scheduled for the first half of the year to which we had tickets already have been cancelled by the performers, including two by our beloved San Francisco Ballet Company. After we see Moulin Rouge on July 2 the Kennedy Center—and, yes, I have the name right—will go dark for at least two years. We don’t get it. On a happier note, Kathleen and I are reasonably healthy. This year we have on our calendar significant trips that will take us to Greenland, Arctic Canada, and Mexico. I am still working as an economic consultant and testifying expert, but I see (involuntary) retirement on the horizon, as my age becomes more of a deterrent for potential clients with litigation matters that may take three to five years to resolve.” John Merrow ’63 writes, “I made it! I managed to bike my age for the 16th consecutive year. I was on my bike just after 5 a.m. The weather was perfect; almost no wind and temperatures in the 50s. I biked 43 miles, mostly by the ocean, and then came home for blueberry pancakes and coffee. Then back on the bike, this time into our forest (which is flat!) for the rest of the ride. I averaged 12.5 miles per hour over the course of 86 miles.”
