Class Note 1950. Jacques Harlow’s widow, “Rusty,” wrote, “I just played a dozen variations of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,’ some of them variations that Glenn Gould had worked on” on her newly acquired baby grand piano. She reports having fun with “the uke,” which I sent her many years ago, with “My Wild Irish Rose.”
Doug Smith writes, “At this time of year, the project to build a tiny house on wheels takes a back seat to gardening. Meredith and I look forward to seeing you and Rebecca in October at the mini-reunion.” They celebrated their 50th in Newport, Rhode Island, overlooking Bannister’s Wharf, where they went on their first date in 1975. They celebrated again the following night in nearby Westerly with family too numerous to count.
Jack Harned’s widow, Jilly, writes she had cataract surgery in June, with another scheduled soon. She has two kids living nearby—“Delicious!”—son Jim at age 58 made a vinyl record of his songs, and granddaughter Emily is expecting in November. Jilly reports growing pains in her Stone Ridge residence but is coping. Her philosophy: Grief does not end but transforms into new expressions. The good news is that grief transformed by loss is still a form of love.
Bill Carpenter’s wife, Terry, writes that “Carp” has his vegetables in and they are looking great: Swiss chard to be harvested this weekend, flower gardens are in bloom, and he is “waging war on weeds.” “Toots,” Joe Medlicott’s widow, last summer married Bob Keene, a fellow resident at a Kendal constant care residence. He is a retired dentist who grew up in the Hanover area and a University of New Hampshire grad, “but his dad went to Dartmouth so he’s OK. Joe would say, ‘One of the good guys.’ We see Joe’s son Alex and his wife quite often, so our Joe is not forgotten. I hope you are fine and ‘plucking those strings.’ ”
