Class Note 1977

Issue

July-August 2026

Class Note 1977. How can it be that our 50th reunion is next June 10-13 in Hanover? The committee is coalescing, including the usual suspects from our executive committee. In a refreshingly transformative development, many non-usual, new, and improved suspects have jumped into the fray, including Eric Edmondson, Steve Pitschke, Wes Chapman, and Tim Michalek (leading our outdoor sports division) and RobinGosnell and LucyTownsend, with room for many more (hint, hint). Ping me if you want in.
Fresh off that wonderful Santa Fe, New Mexico, mosh, the urge to merge with ’77 classmates continues to surge, as evidenced by many recent gatherings. In February Kim York and Tom and Gina Russo joined the Dartmouth alumni travel trip aboard the NatGeo Explorer to Antarctica, communing with thousands of penguins, whales, and seals and inspiring Kim to take a veritable polar plunge.
In April Maura Harway and Richard Mark held their 51st consecutive Passover Seder, this time in New York City with four generations attending. It all began in Hitchcock’s fabulous basement kitchen in 1976 and has followed them wherever they roamed. This year included Bob Baum, Peter Threadgill, Tom Mayer, Barbara Moses ’78, Chris Carstens ’79, and Linda Button ’79. Richard’s 102-year-old mom, Ruth Friendly, was there, as was (in spirit) her brother, Adrian Weiss ’38.
That same weekend in N.Y.C. Bets Kent, Cathy Burnweit, Liz Kadin, Edy Ullman, Kathy Phillips, and Pam Perkins grabbed their annual dinner, stopped traffic dead on Fifth Avenue for Edy to ogle a fellow firefighter’s rig, and crashed a flaming bunnies Easter parade, all while managing to yet again elude headlining Sin City’s police notes.
Back in Santa Fe, Don Wiviott and Judi Owens were married. Celebrating their nuptials were Steve Upton, Alan Wolf, Tom Blueher, honorary mayor of Santa Fe Ted Lapres, and Judi’s 14 grandchildren, whose impeccable behavior eclipsed that of our classmates.
I’m thinking a little prereunion bootcamp might help us regain our ’70s groove and whip your vibe into fratting shape. Crank up some Bowie, Winwood, Ohio Players (thank you, Peter Bernhard); stream Star Wars and Rocky Horror (and of course, Animal House, filmed in 1977 and world-premiered in N.Y.C. in 1978 with a muddy, not red carpet attended by Amy Cholnoky and me in full, sweaty field hockey gear); chase down SNL Season 1 (which I first watched while scouring the urinals after closing The Last Call aka Last Resort); and of course execute the obligatory deep dive into Paradise Lost’s allegories, alliances, and antiheroes (gotta love Satan! Sigh).
What streams and songs will you pursue, renew, review prepping for June 2027? Inquiring minds want to know (and share). Are you one of the stragglers not yet in our BrightCrowd digital 50th reunion yearbook? To join the fun, contact edy2ullman@comcast.net pronto and she will hook you up.
