Class Note 1965

Class Note 1965. I continue to be amazed at the paths our classmates have followed. Dave Beattie is such a story. He writes: “Following our graduation, I completed my ‘fifth year’ at Thayer School and commissioning through the Navy ROTC program. My 20-year, active-duty Navy career started in 1966 with two years of nuclear power and submarine training. This training in many ways felt like an extension of college and Thayer School. Following this initial Navy training, I served tours in two ballistic missile submarines, two attack submarines, and two submarine-related staff assignments.
“For my last tour in the Navy, I was commanding officer of attack submarine USS Jack for 58 months. This tour included an overhaul at Portsmouth (New Hampshire) Naval Shipyard and a five-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea in 1986.
“Following retirement from the Navy, I gained registration as a professional engineer in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. During this era, I worked in land development, constructing and testing a new gypsum wallboard manufacturing facility, and as quality manager for a small company that designed and manufactured centrifugal pumps to customers’ requirements for demanding industrial applications around the world.
“After retiring in 2008, I became involved in several interesting activities. Helping with construction of the Class of 1965 Bunkhouse at the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge complex was a very rewarding and satisfying undertaking. Following its dedication at our 50th class reunion in 2015, I also helped with construction of the 1966, 1967, and 1968 bunkhouses at Moosilauke and presently am a member of the Moosilauke advisory committee. I served as a trustee of Lyndon Institute in Lyndon Center, Vermont, for eight years. This private high school, at which I prepared for Dartmouth, is unique in that there is no public high school for local students. The private school fills that role.”
We have been notified of the loss of Herb Carlson (2026)and Charlie Blaisdell (date unknown). For further information, visit www.biggreen65.com.
