Class Note 1960

Class Note 1960. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when ’60 classmates living in and around the Upper Valley (UV) began getting together once a month for lunch, but we know it started at least 25 years ago. More than 300 lunches later, we’re still going strong! We also know it was JayEmery who came up with the idea. “Some of the older classes have monthly lunches,” said Jay. “Why wait until we’re old?” (Jay had a great knack for strengthening friendships. He’s one of the guys we miss most.)
The monthly gatherings began at the Norwich (Vermont) Inn, then moved to Jesse’s, where we continue to meet. They started as an all-male activity, then, led by Laura-Beth, Denny Goodman’s wife, the women decided to organize their own monthly event. The UV ’60 ladies who lunch meet separately in the “Greenhouse” at Jesse’s—their choice! The guys have a regular table in Jesse’s “Lodge” area. Conversations are wide ranging, but the women have made it clear they have better things to talk about than Dartmouth and the men. Once a year, in mid-December, everyone comes together for the UV class of ’60 gala holiday coed lunch, a much-anticipated event and a great way to kick off the holiday season.
Sadly, through the years we’ve lost some of our regulars, including a few who no longer live close enough to attend, but we’re still able to generate enthusiastic quorums. In the past few months, the UV monthly lunch crowd has included JimAdler and Brooke, Scilla Benson (Jack), BarryBetters, DickChase and Sage, Carol Crouthamel (Jake), HowieFrankel, Laura-Beth Goodman, BillGould,BobHager and Honey, BobJervis and Linda Radtke, RickRoesch and Linda, TonyRoisman, EricSailer and Elaine Campbell, DonSheffield, DudleySmith and Julie, and TomTrimarco.(Unfortunately, we recently lost Honey Hager.)
All classmates and partners are welcome to attend. If you’re planning to be in the area on the fourth Thursday of the month, let us know—it’s Jesse’s at noon. We’ll save you a place!
Thanks to guest columnists Jim Adler and Laura-Beth Goodman for this issue’s Class Notes.
