Class Note 1954

Issue

July-August 2026

Class Note 1954. First, a very loud 1954 drumbeat of gratitude to our outgoing class secretary WayneWeil for his 13 years of diligent reporting and service, shepherding us and our widows so very well. Nearly a year ago, Sheilaand Wayne moved into assisted living. Thank you, Wayne. We love you.
Recently I was seated at my desk hoping to awaken one great thought, when a sudden “ding” hit my hearing aids and via iOS magic up popped DaveDame’s smiling face via FaceTime. Marie and Dave are doing well down in Gainesville, Florida, although he has set aside his fishing gear. Dave has been a fishermen’s fisherman through the years; call him up for advice about any fancy fly rod you may have inherited.
In sports, on ESPN in late March—and thrilling to watch—our Big Green men’s hockey team bested Princeton’s Tigers in overtime to win, after 47 years, the ECAC championship. Wow! In travel news, Carol Mullins escaped with regional buddies this May for a theater weekend in London. Whoopee! Mingling with those pre-theater London crowds and maybe getting something to eat first at Ivy or thereabouts is very hard to beat.
Jerry Goldstein is coping with the November loss of his wife, Dorothy. Jerry advises that a walker beats worrying about falling. We mourn also with Harry Robinson, who buried his lovely Carol this May. John Moran left us some months ago. John faithfully and well shepherded the Dartmouth Medical School class of 1955, almost all ’54s, for 70 years. I spoke with Peter Caldwell, who is happily living with wife Janein Pine Plains, New York, in a home designed by architect Joel Wasserman.Petertold me he has dementiawith its memory issues.
Sue Bastian has served for years as head of the ’54 widows, nurturing all of us through her diligent and loving spadework and communicating with stories of widows’ lives. We love you, Sue, and shall greatly miss you in that role.
Flash: The ’54 mini-reunion is in Hanover August 30-September 1.
I need the great thoughts and reports of our classmates and widows to share; send to me at the email below.
