Class Note 1952
Issue
July-August 2026
Class Note 1952. Fifty years ago, Dartmouth reached a new milestone with the graduation of its first coeducation class of 1976, and this marked a new era for the College on the Hill. This year, as we mark the date and pay tribute to that pioneering class, we also wish to recognize the contribution our spouses and partners have made to our class. Their participation and support have been an integral part of the success our class has experienced as alumni and as supporters of the College. The transition to coeducation, which must seem like ancient history to today’s students, was complicated but was overwhelmingly successful and, in retrospect, even discussing it must seem rather quaint in 2026. As appropriate, the student body today is evenly divided, as is the board of trustees. As an aside, one of our classmates who has not been back to Hanover in many years, recently asked, “How is that thing with girls working out?” Just fine, thank you very much. New subject. You will note below that we have lost quite a few classmates in recent months. This sad news is balanced by the long and productive lives these friends have lived. If you have access to the internet, you will find it very worthwhile to check out their stories. Stay well and keep in touch. We regret to report the passing of several—too many—classmates: David F. Swain IV, Cyril C. Gsell, Charles A. Johnson, A. Erik Gunderson, Richard W. Pratt, Gustavo Pradilla, Anthony M. Hauck III, and Kenneth J. Roman.
