Class Note 2002. Hello, ’02s!
In February our reunion planning committee—including Phil Mone, Yvette Nameth, Yelena (Shklovskaya) Blackwell, Margot (Sullivan) Lalonde, Damara Cockfield, Lonnie Threatte, and Jeff Hafner—met to kick off preparations for our upcoming 25th reunion (June 17-20, 2027). The committee drew inspiration from the recent class of 2000 celebration, discussing everything from hosting dinners on Baker lawn to organizing classmate speakers or classmate-led yoga. Our goal is to keep the weekend inclusive and allow for plenty of organic reconnection and we are looking for more voices to help shape our weekend. Whether you are interested in programming, finance, or social media, we need more volunteers to ensure our committee represents the broad spectrum of our class and all its unique activities—please reach out at dartmouth.class.of.2002@gmail.com if you’d like to join the team!
Lonnie Threatte also shared the exciting news that his son Langston was admitted to Dartmouth as a member of the class of 2030. Amazingly, Lonnie accurately predicted this outcome in his submission to Class Notes in the September/October 2008 issue of the alumni magazine, prior to the birth of his son, when he wrote, “If everything goes as planned my little heir will grow up to become a world-class athlete, call me Dad not Daddy, never ask to borrow my car, go to Dartmouth, give good Christmas gifts, be forever grateful to his father for painting his nursery and pay off his parents’ student loan debt.” I’m sure Langston is fulfilling many of his father’s dreams. Congratulations!
Kendra Quincy (Kemp) Knauf shared a fun ’02 fact: “In Milton, Massachusetts, where I live, there are six ’02s: Erin (McCarthy)andKevin Donahue, Nicole (Campbell) Daley, Lizzy Carroll, Joe Belmonte, and myself! While we haven’t managed an organized mini-reunion yet, we see each other around a lot. Lizzy is even in my book club!”
Mary Anne Mendenhall writes from Encinitas, California, “I encourage you to accompany me in emailing the Dartmouth president about changing the name of the Black Family Visual Arts Center named for Leon Black ’73, apparently one of Jeff Epstein’s steadiest patrons. I am tired of institutions such as Dartmouth modeling how to turn a blind eye to sustained reprehensible behavior as long as the donations are healthy. It is hard to imagine a term of any grant too complicated to unwind under these circumstances. Young minds are shaped by what institutions choose to honor and what they choose to excuse. Dartmouth can do better.”
Whether it’s through advocacy or organizing our next big gathering, it’s clear the class of 2002 remains as engaged and passionate as ever. We look forward to seeing many more of you join the conversation as we march toward our 25th—keep sending your updates!
