Class Note 2001

Issue

May-June 2026

Class Note 2001. Hello, fellow ’01s! Our 25th reunion is officially upon us. I am looking forward to seeing many of you in Hanover from June 19 through 21!
As many of you know, this column was motivated by my husband, Joe Sondheimer, continually talking about when he saw Beyonce perform with Destiny’s Child as the opening act for Wyclef Jean during our first month at Dartmouth. It turns out that a lot of you have the same memory and tell this story a lot. Many of you—such as Joseph McKnight, Debbie (Bernstein) Foster, and Tara Dairman—were quick to point out that at this time, Destiny’s Child had four members not three. (Joe McKnight also remembers buying a tape of the Destiny’s Child single, “No, No, No” after seeing the concert…I think we would call this a “cassingle” if we want to be historically accurate.) Shasta Smith was also there and has a strong memory of Kelly Rowland seeming to lead the group at the time. Betsy Timbers went and was surprised that Destiny’s Child was opening because they were getting pretty big. Bonus points go out to Andrew Heisen, who said that he actually went to the concert with Joe along with his roommates and that Wyclef was great but did not remember the opener. Richard Baek was also there and reports that Tony Luckett went on stage to freestyle with Wyclef. Rumor has it that the members of Destiny’s Child stood in the back of Leede Arena to watch Wyclef (and Tony), so now you can all say that you went to a Wyclef concert with Beyonce.
Thank you to everyone who wrote in with memories of other College concerts. Alisa (Beck) Harrison remembers crowdsurfing at Live and traveling to Lilith Fair with other Theta members during Sophomore Summer. Bradford McKeown says that seeing a group called Sweet Honey at the Hop during his freshman year changed his life and understanding of what was possible in music. Abraham Mahshie went to see Blues Traveler and was lucky enough to snag John Popper’s harmonica toward the end of the show! Betsy Timbers came to Dartmouth during high school to visit her sister and see the Dave Matthews Band. Andrew Heisen also wrote in about seeing the Steve Miller Band, the Indigo Girls, Live, and Guster. Thank you all for this musical walk down memory lane. Joe and I still go to tons of shows with college friends, and I hope you all continue to hit up great concerts with Dartmouth friends in the days and years to come! (Life updates will be in the next column!)
