Class Note 1972

May-June 2026

Class Note 1972. Dear ’72s, we offer congrats to our esteemed president, Joe Davis, for his marriage to Tracey, a retired banker. They met the old-fashioned way: online. Joe and Tracey honeymooned in Cabo. I assume Joe observed riptide warnings. Back in 2008 Dave Hetzel, Dan Hergott (now deceased), Richard Spaziano (now deceased), Marc Josephson, Kirk Andrus, and I spent time with Bill Pollock in Cabo. While the others played golf, I walked on the beach and went in for a swim right next to the shore. In a flash I was taken out a couple of hundred yards. It was a beautiful day and the water was warm, so I just turned on my back and did a leisurely elementary backstroke on an angle toward the beach. Suddenly, another current took me back to the shore and I promptly exited the water.
John Burke organized a charity ice fishing derby on Lake Bomoseen, an almost annual event depending on the thickness of the ice. This year there was almost nine inches of solid ice, which is enough to support pickups on the lake. This discussion reminded John of a client he represented who left a bar and drove across a lake around midnight. His client ran into another truck that was parked on the lake, resulting in a D.U.I. charge. John got his client off because the truck that was hit was black and had no lights on. After all, who could expect a truck would be parked in the middle of the lake? The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. In a cold Vermont winter, who needs to drive around the lake? Of course, sometimes the ice is not as strong as one thinks, which leads to a sinking truck.
John has had recent conversations with Bob King, Dave Engle, and Jim “J-Watt” White, who finally retired after many years of legal phone regulatory work.
Hans Stumm reports that his grandson was accepted early decision to Harvard. I was hoping that the young lad would choose another school to the north of Cambridge.
A group of classmates—Bill Price, John DeRegt, Don Fennessey, Gary Dicovitsky, and Joe Davis—are reviewing our class commitment to help veterans return to college to see if it’s feasible to expand that population.
I texted Chuck Leer to wish him a happy birthday. Chuck reported that he was on the “left coast,” Marina del Rey, California, for sunrise but was hopping on a plane to go to the “greatest city” in the world to attend a Broadway play. They were going to stay in the Big Apple for a few days to celebrate Mary’s birthday too.
Our Pulitzer Prize-winning newsletter editor, Bill Roberts, continues to turn out amazing products for our entertainment and edification.
Our mini-reunion chair, Dan Cooperman, reports that ’74s will be holding a mini-reunion on June 17 near Boston for their class and other nearby classes, including ’72s.
Our 55th is right around the corner!
