Class Note 1951

Issue

May-June 2026

Class Note 1951. On March 6 Harry Carrel ’86 visited with longtime ’51 class secretary Pete Henderson, his wife, Jean, and son John ’82 in Evanston, Illinois. He reports: “Pete was in excellent spirits, still sharp as a tack, and even walked to lunch downstairs with the assistance of a walker. In 2016 the alumni relations office put Pete in touch with me regarding our class of 1986 ‘Compassio’ network, and we have been friends ever since. I met with him several times between 2012 and 2019 while both our daughters attended Northwestern and have continued to correspond and speak with him regularly.
“Pete reminisced that his freshman year roommate and lifelong friend, Bob Hopkins, was the nephew of President Ernest Martin Hopkins. Pete related how they regularly had lunch with ‘Hoppy’ at his home on Rope Ferry Road. Pete also fondly remembered working as the baseball team’s manager under Dartmouth’s legendary hockey, baseball, and football coach, Eddie Jeremiah. Pete was a Theta Delt and lived in Casque & Gauntlet during his senior year.
“After Dartmouth Pete spent four years in the Navy before joining Inland Steel, Booz Allen, and then Northwestern’s business school, where he was the dean of administration during the 1970s. Pete told me his ’51 classmates have enriched his life ‘endlessly’ and that the motto which he lived by is: ‘Do it now.’ Wise counsel, to be sure. Thank you for your decades of service to the class of 1951, Pete, and for your tremendous friendship with so many members of the extended Dartmouth family!”
