Class Note 1985

Issue

March - April 2026

Class Note 1985. To this day I carry my Dartmouth ID (and Cindy’s) in my wallet. Why, you ask. Maybe nostalgia, maybe connection, maybe hope that I still have a balance to get a chicken sandwich at the Hop. Perhaps it will propel me to another scavenger hunt victory as it did in 2010 (Category: “Obtain a College ID”—well, that was easy). Looking at this aforementioned ID recently and, of course, scanning through our Freshman Book, it got me wondering about hairstyles and a burning question for our upcoming reunion. Could you replicate your Dartmouth ID or Freshman Book hairstyle? Could you? Would you? Should you? Only you can answer. Regarding reunion, there are other questions: Who will be there? Will I have time in June to attend? If so, will I be glad I did? Answers: many classmates, ideally, and yes. But this much I know—June 18-21 will be an awesome time in Hanover. Consider you will have a blast and your presence will mean a lot to others. Framed like that, it’s your duty to attend and an opportunity to check out hairstyles and the unofficial winner of the hot category “Most Similar to Freshman Book Hair.”
Update: I know y’all have been eagerly awaiting an update on the 2025 Huntsman World Senior Games. Dana earned a silver in indoor rowing and a gold in pickleball. I received two golds in indoor rowing. (Notice that I used “received.” Let’s just say the field in my events was … uh … a little thin. There are hundreds of dudes in the 60-64 age category who are faster than me. I was just the fastest guy who showed up for this event.) I had a brilliant scheme to break the deadlock with Dana and signed up for a second discipline. Figured when I medaled there, I’d have three medals and I’d be declared the winner. Since I’m a good sport, I didn’t tell Dana what I was doing. Anyway, it turned out that the second discipline awarded commemorative medallions, not medals (darn fine print), so I cycled 40-plus miles for naught. I have another super-secret plan for next year: triathlon relay. If I can medal there and get two medals in indoor rowing, then the debate is over and I win. (Unless Dana and her husband, Tim, medal in doubles pickleball.) Anyway, don’t tell Dana about my plan. Clarity: The above is courtesy of Kris Ellis sharing tales of his continued medal haul and spirited competition with Dana (Blatt) Stewart. Also, good to hear from Pete Massarelli and Mike Oniskey on this thread.
News flash from the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR): Linda Blockus is CUR’s 2027-28 president elect—look at LinkedIn for more details. Way to go, Linda!
June, Hanover—be there!
