Class Note 1975

Issue

March - April 2026

Class Note 1975. Blake Winchell has been one of the most reliable communicators among our many classmates. Perhaps that is because he has so much to share. Recently he traveled to Palm Beach, Florida, on his way to Madrid, Spain, where he has taught business courses for the last 15 years. Apparently, Remy Trafelet ’92 hosted a mini-reunion dinner party for three decades of Dartmouth pals, including Blake, John Low ’73, Scott Sandell ’86, and Remy.
In the last issue I uncovered the web-recorded histories of some of our Alaska-based classmates. Sticking with this theme, I figured I would stay in the west and dig around for some Hawaii news.
In the past I have written about Jim Moriarty, who many of you may know is a truly accomplished diplomat for the United States of America. He spent many years in the foreign service in multiple embassies around the world. He also was an integral member of the U.S. National Security Council during the George W. Bush presidency.
Another fellow Hawaiian is Howard Hodel, who not so long ago retired from a nearly 30-year career in investment and risk management. His most recent post was chief risk officer and acting chief investment officer for the Hawaii Employees Retirement System. Looks to me as though he cannot sit still, as he still devotes his time as an advisor to the Allocator Training Institute, which provides aspiring investment managers with the additional tools necessary to thrive at their organizations.
The next of the successful Hawaiians that I was able to track down (in my own sinister way) is Hoyt Zia. For those who do not know or remember, Hoyt is the son of immigrant parents from Asia. In May he wrote an article for The Dartmouth, which I highly recommend, in which he reflected on that fact and several others. I will whet your appetite with this: It involves a stay in the Hanover jail and a visit from Dean Carol Brewster. For the record, after his Marine Corps service, Hoyt obtained his law degree and after several different corporate positions ultimately retired as general counsel and corporate secretary of Hawaiian Airlines.
One other classmate, David Woodman, also resides in Hawaii. Unable to track him down, I challenge him to chime in when he has a chance to read this. At this time of year it might be a welcome opportunity for all to hightail it to Hawaii and visit with these folks.
I would like to provide a final shoutout to the class of 1975 members who are active on Strava. I have enjoyed seeing the rides, runs, and swims of Lon Cross, Rich Clark, Larry Johnson, and Roger Hillas. This is another great way to connect across the world with classmates and other Dartmouth types. There is even a “Dartmouth Cycling Club” on the app. Sign up!
