Class Note 1965

Issue

March-April 2026

Class Note 1965. Many classmates and their partners have enjoyed Linda Fowler’s tours of the remarkable Pine Park in Hanover. Here’s Steve Fowler’s history of how this came about.
“Last February Linda and I celebrated our 64th Winter Carnival in Hanover, our first date having been 1962 Carnival. In 1993 son Chris ’97 entered Dartmouth. In 1995 Linda moved to Hanover as a government professor and director of the Nelson Rockefeller Center. I followed in 1997 after wrapping up with the law firm I helped found in Rochester, New York. I had an unexpected second legal career doing national alternative energy deals (mostly remotely, before that was a thing) while getting deeply involved in land conservation and the local community, including five years as Hanover’s elected town moderator.
“Chris married a ’96, and they are senior academics at Penn State. Linda and I have been retired for a while (though Linda continues to publish as a scholar), and we spend innumerable hours on the restoration, improvement, and management of Pine Park, one of Dartmouth’s greatest amenities and beloved by students, faculty, and townspeople; we are proud that ’65 is a benefactor.
“This fall grandson Stephen Fowler arrived on campus with the class of 2029. No apologies need be made for this triple-legacy nepo baby with two-generation scholarly connections. Stephen hit the ground running like he was born to be at Dartmouth (which of course he was). I have had to temper my general ideological disapproval of the legacy advantage in the face of the group of my son’s Dartmouth friends who have come to the College in the past several years and for whom we have been honorary grandparents.
“This Thanksgiving we celebrated in Hanover with grandson Stephen and three first-year international students still on campus during the holiday. We hosted young men representing four continents (South Korea, Morocco, and Germany plus the United States) and this amazing group of students, who didn’t know each other but had so much in common, made us proud of Dartmouth’s ability to attract and motivate such talented, kind, and personable individuals.”
