Class Note 1953

Issue

March - April 2026

Class Note 1953. Although you’re reading this with spring in sight, it was written during a very cold December in Hanover. No more students in shorts and flip-flops for a while, but the brand new cross-country ski area at Oak Hill (up above Storrs Pond) is getting rave reviews. Not only do they blow snow for the trails, but they also light the area at night. The Dartmouth cross-country teams are thrilled with it and so is the skiing public.
The class of 1953 Zoom meeting on Sunday, November 8, was a huge success. Twelve classmates and six widows logged into it. It was great to “see” old friends again and learn what everyone has been doing since our last meeting. Steve Pearsall has been teaching mediation and is still writing historical novels. Tim Thomas has moved to a senior living facility in Blue Hill, Maine—which he says reminds him of camp—and he’s taken up oil painting. Wade Sherwood is still making sourdough bread. Richard Cahn is a grandfather and has published Making Law: A Memoir of Good Times. Ron Lazar is currently taking three courses and recently returned from a great trip to Amsterdam.
Carol Henderson told us that her son and his wife are on the president’s advisory council at Dartmouth; and Charlotte Buchanan encouraged more classmates and widows to tell us about their lives in this column. I’ll second that! Everyone agreed that the Zoom meeting was a great idea, so we’ll have another one in March. We sincerely hope you’re planning to join us!
Jay Montgomery’s son Steve ’77, M.D., recently sent a photo of dad and son sailing on Lake Ontario last August.
Sadly, we’ve learned that Walt Shim died in November.
Now that we’ve had such good feedback from our first Zoom meeting, it’s clear we’re all hungry for news of our classmates. Taking a few minutes to send me your news makes a significant difference to all of us. In these increasingly disturbing and uncertain times, it’s comforting to know that the members of this great class of 1953 still care about each other.
