Class Note 1978

January-February 2026
Class Note 1978. Happy New Year, or, more to the point, “Happy Year That Most of the Class of 1978 Turns 70.” I know that celebrations must be in the works, and I’d love to include reports on them in Class Notes, so please keep me in mind as the year unfolds. And if you have any photos that are SFN (safe for newsletter), please send them to Helen Lukash, who will show them off to best advantage and give them wide distribution to an interested and discerning audience.
One celebration we know about is the Antarctica trip, spearheaded by Terry Ann Scriven and Todd Anderson and featuring our own Celia Chen as guest lecturer. At last count, 48 classmates, family, and friends had signed up for the 10-day journey, which kicks off on January 3 from Argentina and will include hiking, whale watching, cruising around icebergs, and more adorable penguins than even Professor Slesnick could count. Look for a full report once everyone is back home and thawed out.
Give a rouse for Steve Mandel, who has been named to Dartmouth’s Magnuson Center for Entrepreneurship Entrepreneurs Hall of Fame. The Entrepreneurs Hall of Fame brings to the spotlight alumni whose ventures have reshaped industries and inspired future leaders. Steve founded Lone Pine Capital in 1997 and built it into one of the most successful hedge funds of all time. “His investment philosophy emphasizes disciplined research, long-term value creation, and a global perspective, earning him a reputation as one of the most respected leaders in the hedge fund industry,” according to the Magnuson Center. Steve stepped back from management of the fund in 2019 but is still dispensing investment wisdom; to know more, check out his masterclass episode on the Apple Podcast series Joys of Compounding. He has also continued a career in philanthropy that has included serving as president of the boards of trustees of both Dartmouth and Phillips Exeter Academy. Well done, Steve!
A request from your class communications honchos: Please make sure we have your up-to-date contact information. There are tons of programs, events, and conversations that we would like to share with you in whatever way makes the most sense for you. Not to mention the fact that we are starting to plan our 50th reunion in 2028—yes, you read that right, we are starting already! You won’t want to miss out on the fun of attending or, if you’re up for it, being part of the planning process. Please send any contact updates directly to the alumni office or to your class co-secretaries at the addresses below.
Like a 70th birthday, a 50th college reunion is an unforgettable milestone—if you do it right.
