Class Note 1972. Dear ’72s, Peggy and Jack Manning reported that daughter Molly ’12 was married in Red Lodge, Montana, on September 20. The wedding lasted four days with just under 200 in attendance. Class president Joe Davis was there, as were lots of former Dartmouth female rugby players and Dartmouth members of Jack’s family, including brother Jim ’79; son John ’08, who played corner for the football team; stepsister Janet ’76 and husband Bill Pickard ’71, captain of the crew team; niece Jackie ’05 and husband Jeff Kinkaide ’01. John “Goose” Gleason ’76 supplied his great Two Moons wine. As one would expect, there were lots of fun stories shared, including someone who thought Jack’s speech about the bride was the best he had ever heard and funny, too! Wah-who-wah!
John Burke had a recent visit from John Fieldsteel. The two talked about old times sharing an apartment in Boston with Bob King and Dennis Cronin. They often got calls from a pizza place and funeral parlor with similar numbers and came up with some ingenious ways to respond to those calls. A friend of mine recently played tennis with Joe Fallon. Joe still has a mean serve and plenty of zip on his forehand. Joe hosts at his Lake Champlain home an annual poker game that includes Mike Sack, Jon Einsidler, Chip Carstensen, and non-’72s.
I, with David Rath, became an emeritus member of the Vermont Bar Association. David addressed the group about the guardian ad litem program and the satisfaction of nonbillable work.
Nineteen classmates out of 39 people gathered in Charleston, South Carolina, for a fabulous mini-reunion. Give a rouse for Demetry Papadopoulos, Dave Engle, and Dan Cooperman, mini-reunion chair, for putting on a terrific event. It included a dinner at the Swamp Fox restaurant, Demetry’s yacht club, cultural events, and tours of historic Charleston, including Fort Sumter, upon whose firing by the Confederate soldiers started the Civil War. We watched an exciting Dartmouth-Yale football game streamed to Demetry’s club and saw Yale go ahead with 39 seconds remaining, only to lose by a Dartmouth 51-yard field goal with four seconds remaining. In attendance were Demetry, Dave, Dan, Shel Prentice, Neal Traven, David Stephens, Jack Brooks, Robert Nycz, Drew Howard, Jack Vayda, Mark Hennigh, Kirk Andrus, Charlie Shockey, Jack Bang, Carol Zwick, Bill Thorworth, Bill Mills, Chris Carey, and Fred Crossman. A special thanks to Demetry’s wife, Valerie, and son Tony ’06 and wife Allison; Dave’s wife, Carolyn; Neal’s wife, Elizabeth, for being photographer; and all those who helped setting up and taking down the event, including Kevin O’Shea ’73. John DeRegt, Joe Davis, and Steve Tozer had to cancel late for various reasons, and Gary Dicovitsky and Bob King went on an African safari that conflicted with our mini. Classmates came from vast distances to keep the ’72 spirit alive.
Winter well.
