Class Note 1955
Issue
January-February 2026
Class Note 1955. It’s the end of October as these notes are done for your reading in January. By that time, you will know if the government is open, who won the World Series, and if Dartmouth was able to repeat as Ivy League football champions. Perhaps in November you saw Ken Burns’ latest documentary The American Revolution, labeled “a bloody epic” by the Economist that would be “the dream of an idealism that would change the world.” Coincidentally, the Hood Museum now offers a perspective titled, Revolution Reconsidered: History, Myth, and Propaganda.
Dartmouth had a great start to the fall term with 1,185 class of 2029 matriculates and a grand reopening of the Hopkins Center to celebrate the arts on campus. Dartmouth was the only Ivy not to go into its waiting list. Also of note, President Beilock declined to sign the Trump higher education compact and once again took a strong stand for academic freedom. We had a grand 70th reunion in September with 39 classmates, guests, and widows present. President Marty Aronson presented the class gift check of $110,170 to the College to provide two scholarships. Reunion details will be forthcoming in Joe Mathewson’s newsletter.
I also offer a gentle reminder to consider positively this year’s Dartmouth College Fund. We did very well last year with contributions, not so well with participation. This year let’s all get behind restoring our historic 55-percent rate.
Sadly, we report the passing of Peter Fishbein, Herbert Gramm, John Lefevre, Bill Nickerson, Roy Pfeil, Conrad Wesselhoeft, and B. Carter White.
