Class Note 1955

Issue

November-December 2025

Class Note 1955. To write these notes the end of August when they will not be read until November is an interesting task. Our 70th reunion has been completed successfully, the World Series is over, the days of fall color are behind us, Homecoming is complete, and football has started with Dartmouth now able to compete for a national championship. The holiday season will soon be upon us so let me be the first to extend joyous family holiday times to you all.
When we entered Dartmouth 74 years ago there was a war being waged. That war had a ceasefire in 1953 but no peace settlement signed, so technically, it still goes on. What’s different today? Our military has been in harm’s way almost continually since then although the U.S. Congress last declared war on December 9, 1942. President John Sloan Dickey sent us on our way 70 years ago with the words “to follow through.” Have we? As a class, we have been notably supportive of the College. Several of us have had notable achievements to our professions, academia, and society. Today, at this stage of our lives, what is the focus of our follow-through or what should it be?
The results of this year’s Dartmouth College Fund (DCF) are in, and congratulations to all of you for the outstanding amount of $110,170 (68 donors, 38 percent) raised to fund two full scholarships. A thanks to agents Marty Aronson, Bruce Alexander, John Braestrup, Frank Davidson, Mike Gorton, and Joe Mathewson. Also, a very special thank you to our widows, who contributed 7 percent of the total. Let’s now make a year-end contribution to the DCF and get off to a good start.
George Fenzel writes that he will travel from Hawaii with his wife, Judy, to the annual quilting festival at Lake Tahoe, California, where she will exhibit, our reunion weekend.
Sadly, we report the passing of Tom Blumberg, Frank Carlton, Norman Fine, Harlan Jessup, John Levitas, and Doug Melville.
