Class Note 1992
Issue
July-August 2024
More literary updates—but first, March Madness results! This marked our 10th year of classmates celebrating the annual college basketball tournament together.
“Dear Madness ’92s (you know who you are), I would like to thank you for the record participation in this year’s bracketology competition! This year’s women’s NCAA final eclipsed the men’s game in so many ways, but no matter what, I’m always gonna pick Texas. Thus, your 2024 winners are: Jonathan Harrington (women’s bracket) and Brian Gordon (men’s bracket). Hail to the champs! Honorable mentions go out to Matt Wilson, Cally Bybee, and the venerable Jesse Bradley for leading the pack going into the Final Four (along with Brian), and Sweet 16, respectively. All of these fine folks have won themselves some swag from the Dartmouth Co-op! As always: Please let me know if there were any kid participants, as they will get a prize of their own. All tomorrow’s hoops, M.C. ‘Bracketmeister’ Caldwell.”
Be sure to give a copy of Lisa Stringfellow’s second book for middle-grade readers, Kingdom of Dust, to your kids or students! It’s “a West African-inspired fantasy about a girl who is determined to return both magic and justice to her people—and whose destiny holds more surprises than she could ever imagine,” and will be released August 20 by HarperCollins/Quill Tree Books. Lisa is a middle-school teacher and lives in Boston with her children and bossy cat. You can read more about her books at lisastringfellow.com and pre-order at your favorite bookseller.
Here are more replies to our question “Read any good books lately?”
Mark A. B. Carlson wrote, “As an English major I still spend a good amount of my free time reading fiction. I read this book four or five years ago and it remains one of the favorite two or three I have read during the last decade: J R by William Gaddis.”
Kimberly Malone said, “I’ve just read The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride and really enjoyed it!”
Bewilderment and The Overstory, both by Richard Powers, and The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles are a few favorites of Tara Grabowsky.
Bryant Lee provided us with a list of faves: The Curse of Pietro Houdini by Derek B. Miller, The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton, The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, and The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson.
Our hearts break whenever we learn about the loss of a classmate, and this has been an especially difficult year. Mike Bobo passed away in February, and the class of 1992 offers most sincere condolences to his wife, Casey (Hagerman) Bobo, and to all his family and friends. Please take a moment to visit 1992.dartmouth.org/memoriam and email us if you’d like to contribute a remembrance of Mike or anyone else who has left us too soon.
