Class Note 1985
Issue
September-October 2024
Fall is a beautiful time of year, and especially on the Dartmouth campus. As I sit writing this column in June an oppressive heat wave is blanketing New England. I’m longing for cooler temperatures, crisp air, and relief from the heat and humidity. But let me share some recent classmate activity that happened over the summer. Our class president Valerie Hartman reports bumping into fellow ’85 Juánne Reneé Harris at the 2024 Mastercard New York Mini 10K in Central Park. These two fabulous women got their run on under a glorious blue sky in celebration of this road race named in the early 1970s after the creation of the mini skirt. Who knew?! The photos of Val and Juánne capture the electric energy of what looked like a truly fun event. Holly Anderson, a practicing cardiologist in New York City, hosted a fundraising cocktail party in support of N.Y. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand ’88 and emphasized the imperative to improve women’s heart health. Holly has spent her career in this field and serves as director of education and outreach at the Perelman Heart Institute and as medical advisor to the Women’s Heart Alliance. Holly reports that husband Doug Hirsch has joined the ranks of those obsessed with pickleball. Not only did Doug win the 60-and-over national singles championship as a player, he is also co-owner of a major league pickleball team! Holly shared updates on a bunch of other classmates. Attending the fundraiser were Pete Regan, adjunct professor at Tuck Business School and his wife, Janet Coit, environmental lawyer and head of the National Marine Fisheries Service. Holly sees Emily Saltzman Hoffner, who works and lives in Westchester, New York, and spends time in midcoastal Maine with her husband. It sounds like Lynn Brody is living her best life as a retired interventional radiologist living in Paris with her husband and learning French. C’est formidable! And Holly runs into Andy Morton, Bill Tyree, and Rick Kleeman on the golf course. Adding to the impressive list of our classmates who are authors, Juanita Sanders Thomas wrote The Cross & The Gavel, a fascinating sounding exploration of “the drama of authentic legal decision-making by God Himself.” Juanita’s book draws on her experience as a retired attorney, theologian, conflict-resolution expert, and ordained minister. The convergence of politics, law, and religious ideology in today’s global landscape makes Juanita’s work a compellingly relevant read. Finally, if you haven’t done so recently, consider updating your College profile on the alumni relations website: https://alumni.dartmouth.edu/update-your-information. When you keep your profile and contact information current, you ensure that you will continue to receive the alumni magazine and the latest email alerts and digital content from the College’s alumni relations team. Homecoming 2024 is set for November 1-2. Whether you make it back to Hanover or you watch Dartmouth play Harvard from elsewhere, enjoy every moment of the beautiful fall season!
