Class Note 1981

Issue

May-June 2023

Climates and times, they are a changing. This winter has seen snow in Los Angeles and record high temps in the mid-Atlantic. On the personal side, more of us are retiring or redirecting or revitalizing. Due to the vagaries of the Covid-19 pandemic, the winningest Dartmouth hockey coach Bob Gaudet made his retirement official, for the third time! Just as importantly, he has taken up paint brushes and canvas with his patented zeal. The festivities brought together alums from far and wide. Fellow co-captain Mark Bedard flew in from California and Mark Uhrynuk traveled from Hong Kong, where he has been practicing law. He will be retiring this year to his wonderful lake front home in southern central Canada. Robert Higgins, cardiothoracic surgeon and new president of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, was recognized as the most accomplished hockey team manager in the history of Dartmouth. Jim Jankowski gave a moving farewell speech and peer coaches throughout Bob’s career told most entertaining anecdotes. A fellow two-time NCAA “Final Four” teammate Chip Bettencourt joined in on the alumni hockey game. David Shula was there with Buddy Teevens ’79 in support. Amazingly, Dave has completed five years as coach of football receivers at Dartmouth after his long NFL career. He and Leslie Shula have a growing gaggle of grandchildren who send them traveling. Joe McLaughlin is an Upper Valley resident now working on the Mobile Virtual Player (MVP) team, which is revolutionizing the safety of contact sports.

Howard Morse, Chris Toll, Susan Adler Funk, and John Mott took part in the Dartmouth Lawyer’s Association annual ski meeting at Whistler, British Columbia. Next year is scheduled for Snowbird. Following the skiing theme, Susan Hess hung out at Steamboat Mountain skiing with daughter Jennifer ’16 and friends.

It was thrilling to open up The Wall Street Journal and read about the opening of a new elementary school named for Annette Gordon-Reed in Conroe, Texas, where she was the first Black child to enroll in that town’s white school system.

The Directors Guild of America has honored Mark Hansson with the Frank Capra Achievement award for his more than 130 assistant director credits and his dedication to the service of the guild. In the world of the performing arts, there will be a special ’81 mini-reunion within a College event in New York, Saturday, May 20, to see the musical New York, New York, cowritten by Sharon Washington.
